Tools: Apples, Hamarr, Fire, Skurðgoðar of Frigg and Óðinn.

Preparation

• Light a sacred fire, or Nauðeldur.

• Clean the apples in milk and wipe them with a linen cloth.

• Hamarsign all of the implements, then place the Hamarr in the lap of the wife.

• This rite should be performed by husband and wife.

Helga– Bless

Pass the apple over the sacred flame and say:

Þá tóku þeir síur ok gneista þá,
er lausir fóru ok kastat hafði ór Sǫkkdalir,
ok settu á mitt Ginnungap á himin bæði ofan
ok neðan til  at lýsa himin ok jǫrð.
 Á himin bæði ofan
ok neðan til  at lýsa himin ok jǫrð.

Then they took the embers

 and then the sparks

 that had been loosened

and cast from Sǫkkdalir,

and set them in the middle of Ginnungagap

 in heaven both above

 and below,

to light up heaven and earth.

In heaven both above

 and below,

to light up heaven and earth.

Biðja– Pray

The husband then takes the apple and holds it up to the Gods:

Biðjum goðunum með
 miklum áhuga,
 at geta sér barn.
Frigg heyrir bæn
 ok segir Óðni,
 hvers biðja.
 Hann verðr eigi ǫrþrifráða
 ok tekr óskmey sína,
ok fær í hǫnd henni eitt epli
 ok biðr hana færa.
 Út af hans aldni
skal á eld bera
 fyr kelisjúkar konur;
 þats þær innar skyli,
 útar hverfa
sá er hann með mǫnnum mjǫtuðr.

We pray to the gods with

 heart and soul

 to beget a child.

Frigg hears the prayer

and tells Óðinn what is prayed for.

 He is not without resources,

 and takes his wishmaid,

and puts an apple in her hand

and bids her to carry it.

 Out of this fruit

which shall be borne on fire

 to womb-sick women;

 shall that come out

 that was hidden within,

so it is with the Manna Mjǫtuðr.

After this the husband gives the apple to his wife and she eats it. This is the conclusion of the rite.
